How to get the Most out of Live Quilt Alongs
A live virtual quilt-along is an online event where quilters from various locations join together in real-time to work on a quilt project, following step-by-step instructions provided by a host or instructor. These events typically use video conferencing platforms (like Zoom or YouTube Live) and are designed to bring the quilting community together, provide instruction, and inspire creativity.
Participating in a virtual live quilt-along with GE Designs can be a wonderful way for quilters to learn new techniques from Gudrun herself, connect with others, and create something beautiful. Here are some tips to get the most out of the experience:
1. Prepare Ahead of Time
-
Gather Supplies: Review the supply list in advance and ensure you have all the necessary fabric, tools, and accessories. And don't forget to change your rotary blade and start with a new needle!
-
Pre-Cut Pieces: If the instructions allow, pre-cut your fabric to save time during the live session.
-
Test Your Equipment: Check your internet connection, and computer or device. Have your sewing machine in good working order.
2. Create a Comfortable Workspace
-
Organize Your Space: Arrange your sewing area with easy access to tools like scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, and ironing boards.
-
Lighting: Ensure your workspace is well-lit to minimize strain and make sewing easier.
-
Minimize Distractions: Let family members know you’ll be busy, and turn off notifications on your devices. Have any meals ready to go. Gudrun always includes great recipes ahead of time for you to enjoy.
3. Engage With the Community
-
Introduce Yourself: Join the chat or discussion area to connect with other participants.
-
Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask the host or other participants for clarification or tips.
-
Share Progress: Post photos of your work on Gudrun's Quilt Crew Facebook page, using the quilt along's hashtag if applicable. For Jolee, we are using #JoleeQAL
- The Jolee pattern is a brand new pattern Gudrun has designed for our next Live Quilt Along on February 15th, 2025. Jolee is made with either 1/2 yard cuts or Fat Quarters and comes together very easily with the Stripology rulers. Great for confident beginners as well as seasoned quilters. You can find more information here.
4. Follow the Pace, but Stay Flexible
-
Work at your own pace, don't feel overwhelmed if you feel behind. If it's a GE Designs Quilt Along, the videos will always be available in your account afterwards, so don't stress out.
-
Take Notes: Print out the pattern and jot down instructions, tips, or creative ideas shared during the session for later reference.
5. Stay Inspired and Motivated
-
Celebrate Small Wins: Completing each step is an achievement—acknowledge your progress.
-
Be Creative: Add your personal flair to the project through fabric choices or design modifications.
6. Finish What You Start
-
Set a timeline for completing the project after the live event, especially if you couldn't finish during the session. Break it into manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
By being prepared, engaged, and flexible, you’ll enjoy the process, learn from Gudrun and participants, and end up with a quilt you’re proud of!
